Digitunity Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Digitunity (“Digitunity”, “we”, “us” or “our”), a nonprofit public charity, collects, uses, and shares personal information about visitors to our website, digitunity.org (our “Site”), individuals who donate equipment or money using our platform, and other individuals who communicate or interact with us in their personal capacity (“you” or “your”).

Digitunity strives to make a difference in achieving digital equity by connecting interested donors of used technology equipment with qualified recipients, building a national network of people and organizations committed to our mission, and educating the public through our networking projects, newsletters, and published resources (our “Services”)

Scope of our Privacy Policy

We use the term “personal information” in this Privacy Policy to refer to information that identifies, relates to, describes, or is reasonably capable of being associated, directly or indirectly, with an individual person.  Personal information does not include information about businesses and other organizations or their representatives.  Personal information also does not include information that has been modified in a substantial way so that it no longer can reasonably identify or be linked to an individual.

This Privacy Policy also does not cover the privacy practices of organizations that receive equipment donated through our platform.  This Privacy Policy also does not apply third-party plugins and other features that provide functionality for our Site, social media you use to connect with us, or third-party websites to which you may choose to navigate from links on our Site.

Sources and Types of Personal Information We Collect

The main sources and types of personal information we collect are summarized below:

  1. Account Registration and Network Sign-up
    We collect your name, zip code, e-mail address and other contact information when you create an account to participate as an individual equipment or cash donor or sign up to join the Digital Opportunity Network.
  2. Processing Requests to Give Equipment or Cash Donations
    When you arrange to make an equipment donation, you will be asked to select a receiving organization and to provide your contact information so that the receiving organization can communicate with you directly to arrange to receive the equipment.  When you sign up to make a cash gift, a third-party payment service will collect your name, credit card, or bank information, amount of your gift, and your email address and process your gift.
  3. Newsletter, Mailing List Sign-up
    When you sign up for our newsletter or mailing list, we ask for your email address or postal address.
  4. Requests for Resources
    When you request a copy of a report or article on our Site, we ask for your name, e-mail address, and organization.
  5. Sponsor and Partner Donation Programs
    If your employer, university, or other organization sponsors an equipment or cash donation drive, we may receive information about you and other individuals who participated.
  6. Email Interconnectivity
     If you receive email from us, we use internet tools to capture data related to when you open our message and click on any links or banners it contained.  We use this information to track the effectiveness of our communications with you and with all our donors and partners.  This information is shared with a third party (Active Campaign) for these purposes
  7. Site and Internet Activities
    When you browse or use our Services on your computer or mobile device, we use cookies and other internet tracking technologies to collect Internet activity and demographic data and Site usage metrics (see “Online Data Collection” and “How You Can Restrict Online Data Collection and Personalized Advertising,” below).
  8. Community Forums and Social Media
    If you post a comment or information on a publicly accessible blog, community forum, comments section, or other interactive feature way may offer on our Site or on a social media platform, we will collect the information you post. You should be aware that any information you post can be read, collected, or used by others who visit these community areas and may be used to send you unsolicited messages.
  9.  Surveys/Feedback/Support
    If you respond to a survey request or provide feedback to us, we may ask for your name, e-mail address, phone, and demographic information that you can choose to provide to us. We use this information to assess whether our Site and Services are performing effectively, whether we are meeting the expectations of donors, recipients, and other stakeholders, and what improvements we should consider in the future.

Online Data Collection 

We (and our third-party service providers) may place cookies, device identifiers, web beacons, scripts, and similar tracking technologies on your web browser or mobile device when you visit our Site, for the purposes summarized below. (In this Privacy Policy we use the term “cookies” to refer generally to cookies and similar technologies.)  

You can use the settings or tools offered on your browser to refuse or deny cookies, or to delete cookies that have already been stored. (See “How You Can Restrict Online Data Collection and Personalized Advertising” below.)

  1. Log in and Identification
    Cookies enable our Site to recognize and verify you and your device when you return to the Site or log in to access your account by storing data including, for example, your password, device and browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses), device and browser identifiers and information (including device, application, or browser type, version, plug-in type and version, operating system, and other technical data).
  2. Features and Performance
    Cookies enable functionality for the features and options you select to use on our Site; deliver consistent performance; recognize and implement your preferences; and enable information sharing with the organization you select to receive an equipment donation.
  3. Location
    If activated by you, we can obtain geolocation data from device sensors, GPS signals, WiFi access points, and cell towers. We can also more generally identify your location through IP address or mobile device identifier.
  4. Data Analytics
    We may track and log web usage data about your interactions with our Site and other online activities including, for example, browsing history, usage rates, settings preferences, content interactions (including searches, page views, downloads, and prints), and user journey history (including clickstreams and page navigation, URLs, timestamps, content viewed or searched for, page interactions, and similar data).
  5. Internet-Based Advertising
    We may use cookies and device identifiers to target advertising for our Services on third-party websites and to record and track clicks on these advertisements

How You Can Restrict Online Data Collection and Personalized Advertising

You can restrict how cookies are used to track and log data about your visits to our Site and other websites and to deliver personalized advertisements to you on our Site and other websites. If you restrict the use of cookies some of the features on our Site may not be fully functional.

The controls you may be able to use include:

  • Managing the settings on your web browser or device.
  • Installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on described at the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on page at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
  • Communicating directly with third-parties we may authorize to collect data on our Online Services as explained, for example. at:
  • Opting out of Google’s use of cookies or device identifiers by visiting Google’s Ad Setting webpage or your account settings in the Google browser.
  • Visiting http://optout.aboutads.info to learn more about personalized advertising and how to opt-out of personalized advertising on your web browser and Mobile Apps by companies participating in the Digital Advertising Alliance.
  • Purchasing a utility from an independent software provider that you install on your computer browsers to limit tracking of your browsing activity.


Do Not Track (DNT) is an optional browser setting that is used by some website operators and third parties.  Our Site does not respond to DNT signals.

How We Use Personal Information

We may use your personal information for any of the following purposes:

  • Support our core activities by processing registrations and sign-ups for our Services, providing our Services, and operating the Site
  • Establish your user name and password if you set up an account or wish to use the donation matching platform; your credentials are then used to identify you when you want to access the platform
  • Process equipment and cash donations
  • Operate the equipment donation matching platform
  • Send newsletters and other information about our Services
  • Manage, analyze and protect the security, performance and functioning of our Site
  • Develop and manage the Digital Opportunity Network and communicate with its members
  • Send surveys and other promotional materials
  • Conduct analytics to understand and improve the user experience and functionality of our Site
  • Gather internet usage information that may be used for online advertising
  • Verify an organization’s nonprofit or other eligibility status
  • Manage risks to the rights, privacy, property and safety of Digitunity, our equipment recipients, donors, employees, and sponsors (such as identity theft, data misuse, and fraud)
  • Comply with valid legal process and respond to governmental requests
  • Other purposes specifically disclosed to you at the time we may ask you to provide personal information.

Why and with Whom We Share Personal Information

Your personal information may be accessible or disclosed for business purposes to the categories of third parties described below, and may engage these companies to support our operations and the administration of our Site and Services. We do not, and do not intend, to sell your personal information for any purpose.

  • Information Technology and Other Business Services Providers:  We engage third party vendors to support various administrative and technology operations.  Examples may include data hosting storage and processing, website hosting, single sign-on technology, and information technology support.
  • Donation Partners and Network Participants:  If you elect to use our equipment donation matching platform, the recipient you select will receive your contact information and the types of equipment you would like to donate.  If you sign up as a member in the Digital Opportunity Network, the other members will have access to [your name, organization, contact information, and areas of interest].
  • Payment Processors.  We use third-party payment services to process cash donations. Your personal information needed to process the your gift will be collected by the payment processor—not by us—and will be subject to the processor’s privacy policy, rather than this Privacy Policy.
  • Risk Management Providers:  We may disclose personal information to service providers who assist with fraud detection and prevention, identity verification, and protection of the rights, privacy, safety, and property of our customers, employees, and business.
  • Site Usage Analytics Services:  We use third-party services, such as Google Analytics, to collect website usage data and provide usage and functionality reports to us.  Although Digitunity does not disclose any directly identifying personal information to data analytics services, the provider may monitor a user’s interactions with our Site and combine this data with data from other websites monitored by the same service provider, and then use the combined data for its own business and commercial purposes.  In that case, the processing of personal information will be the sole responsibility of the service provider and subject to its privacy practices.
  • Online Advertisers:  We may use third party advertising companies to serve advertisements on our Site and on selected websites and mobile applications operated by others. These companies may set their own cookies or use similar web technologies to collect information about your online and mobile device activities over time and across different websites. These companies then direct advertisements to you based on your interests as suggested by the history of your visits to this Site and other websites.
  • Legal Process and Enforcement:  We may disclose personal information to third parties to:  enforce our agreements and rights; enforce the Terms of Use for our Site; comply with legal requirements; investigate, respond to and resolve claims or complaints; and respond to law enforcement, legal process, or a request for cooperation by a government entity.
  • National Cristina Foundation:  We may share personal information with our affiliated foundation, National Cristina Foundation.

Social Media

Information and images you post on social media about your use of our Services is subject to your social media platform’s privacy practices and is not covered by this Privacy Policy. You may sign into and associate your social network account (such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook) with our Site or Services. If you use this functionality, we will have access to the information in your social network profile that you have made available for sharing, and we may collect and use that information subject to the social network’s terms of use and this Privacy Policy. Please refer to the privacy settings in your social network account for information about (1) what data is shared with connected applications including our Site, (2) how to manage the data that is shared through your social media account, including information about your activities using our Services, and (3) how to disconnect a social media account from our Site and Services.

Third-Party Sites

Our Site displays links to the websites of organizations we have authorized to receive technology equipment donations using the Digitunity platform. We may also provide links to articles and resources of interest to people concerned about the digital equity and inclusion. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that website. These external websites are not operated by Digitunity. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, accuracy, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party websites or services. They may collect your IP address or device identifier and other internet browsing data, and may set a cookie to enable their features to function and track your usage. We recommend that you review the privacy policies of these sites before sharing any information with them.

Retention and Protection of Personal Information

We will retain your personal information as long as we provide Services to you, and as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve any disputes, and enforce our agreements.

No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is fully secure. While we use reasonable efforts to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information.

Our Site permits you to create an account and may also provide single sign-on functionality. When you create a Digitunity online account, you will be prompted to create a password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password, and you are responsible for any access to or use of your account by someone else that has obtained your password, whether or not such access or use has been authorized by you. You should notify us of any unauthorized use of your password or account, and, if any unauthorized use is suspected, you should immediately reset your password.

If you have reason to believe that your interaction with us is no longer secure (for example, you feel that the security of any account you might have with us has been compromised), you must immediately notify us of the problem by contacting us at privacyteam@digitunity.org or 1-203-863-9100

How You Can Make Changes to Your Account

You can access, change, or discontinue your Digitunity account either through the Site portal or by contacting us at: privacyteam@digitunity.org or 1-203-863-9100.

You may choose at any time to not receive e-mail marketing communications from us by using the “unsubscribe” feature provided in our e-mail marketing messages or by contacting us and electing to opt-out of our mailing lists. See, “How To Contact Us” below.

If you unsubscribe from receiving these e-mails, you will still receive service notifications and administrative messages that are not promotional in nature.

Children’s Online Privacy

Our Site and Services are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information about children under the age of 18. If we learn that personal information from children under age 18 has been collected, we will take reasonable measures to promptly delete that information from our records. If you become aware of any personal information we have collected from children under age 18, please contact us as explained below under “How to Contact Us.”

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may make changes to this Privacy Policy at any time. If we make a material change to the way in which we collect, use, or share your personal information, we will post a notice on the Site. Your continued use of the Site or Services after a change to this Privacy Policy constitutes your consent to be bound by the revised Privacy Policy. We encourage you to periodically review this page for the latest information on our privacy practices.
